Knights, Grit, and Giving Back: Medieval Rush Enters 15th Year
Organized by Bismarck native Tanner Schweitzer, Medieval Rush has grown from a simple idea into a can’t-miss annual tradition. With a background as a fitness instructor and years of experience participating in mud runs, Schweitzer was asked to launch the first Medieval Rush 15 years ago while living in California. Four years later, he moved back to Bismarck and has been growing the event and offering new courses since.
This year’s race takes place June 13 and features an all-new course designed to keep returning participants on their toes while welcoming first-timers with an unforgettable experience.
Set against the rugged prairie near Bismarck State College, the course offers more than just physical challenges, it delivers incredible views overlooking the Missouri River. It’s a unique blend of natural beauty and adrenaline that you won’t find anywhere else.
Participants of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to join. Whether you’re aiming to compete or simply want to enjoy the course at your own pace, Medieval Rush makes space for everyone. “Some people just walk the course, others try the obstacles,” says Schweitzer. “Most participants who don’t plan to try any obstacles end up doing them anyways. It’s just fun for everyone.”
This year, 20 obstacles will be set up throughout the course, including mud pits, rope climbs, and endurance-based challenges that test both body and mind. One highlight this year is a new multi-level wall climb, perfectly positioned with the old train bridge in the background, an ideal spot for the professional photographer who will be on-site capturing the action.
Not interested in racing? Participants can choose to walk, hike, or jog the course, making it just as much about the experience as it is the finish line. The kids’ run is a one-mile route designed to be fun, engaging, and achievable. The adult course is a 3.2-mile course that challenges endurance and strength.
Beyond the physical benefits, Schweitzer says the event offers something even more meaningful, especially for younger participants. “This is a great opportunity to give kids a reason to unplug from screens and connect with others outdoors. So many of them feel a sense of accomplishment when they pass that finishline.”
Medieval Rush is also about giving back. A portion of the proceeds supports the Dakota Children’s Advocacy Center, helping provide critical services to children in need throughout the region. With support from local sponsors and volunteers, this event truly reflects the spirit of giving.
Volunteers are always welcome and can simply show up the morning of the event to lend a hand.
For Schweitzer, the motivation is simple. “I’ve been blessed with so much in my life. This is just a small way to make a difference,” he shares.
Spots are filling quickly, and registration fees increase by $10 each month, so don’t wait to secure your place. Visit medievalrush.com to sign up.
Not racing this year? Cheer on participants and enjoy the scenery. Spectator passes are just $10.
