Keeping Your Account Contacts Current is More Important Than You Think

Your BEK account holds more than just a name and phone number; it holds the details of how your business communicates. Federal law gives that information a name and a set of protections. It’s called CPNI, and understanding it matters for every business on our network.

What Is CPNI?

CPNI stands for Customer Proprietary Network Information. It refers to the data your telecommunications provider collects about how you use your service: call records, the numbers you dial, call duration and frequency, and the features and services associated with your account. In short, it’s the behind-the-scenes data that comes with running a phone system.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) treats this information as sensitive and has strict rules about who can access it, how it can be used, and what happens if it’s ever exposed without authorization. Those rules apply to every telecommunications carrier and VoIP provider in the country, including BEK.

This isn’t just a box we check. CPNI rules exist because your account information, in the wrong hands, could be used to fraudulently access or modify your service. Carriers who fail to follow FCC guidelines face significant enforcement action, including substantial monetary penalties. More importantly, our customers trust us with their business communications. That trust is something we work to earn every day, and following CPNI guidelines is a foundational part of that commitment.

What This Means for Your Account

Because of these protections, BEK only can make changes to your account when the request comes from an authorized CPNI contact on file. Only these individuals can call to add features, set up extensions, modify your service, or discuss account details. That means if someone calls BEK on behalf of your business and their name isn’t listed as an authorized contact, we cannot process their request. It doesn’t matter how familiar they sound or what information they have. Our hands are tied, and intentionally so.

Keep Your Authorized Contacts Up to Date

Businesses change. People change roles, take on new responsibilities, or move on entirely. When that happens, your authorized contact list needs to reflect it promptly.

We ask that you review your authorized contacts regularly:

  • An employee who managed your account leaves the company
  • A new office manager, IT contact, or administrator takes over communication responsibilities
  • Your business undergoes a reorganization or ownership change

To update your authorized contacts, give our team a call. It takes just a few minutes, and it goes a long way toward keeping your account secure.

Keeping your contacts current isn’t just a compliance formality. It’s how you stay in control of your own service.
