Cowboy Ethics, High Expectations, and Building the Next Generation

He makes the case that face-to-face teaching still matters, even in a world full of screens. Trent shares what he saw at a technical school in Dickinson, North Dakota, where students rise to the level they are challenged to reach. Both agree that when society expects more from young people, they often deliver more.

The conversation also dives into Dwight’s mentoring work with Hispanic students, where he trades English lessons for Spanish and builds respect both ways. One student even thanked him for opening his eyes to ranching and cattle drives through videos and stories. Trent and Dwight talk about taking this mentoring model beyond Indiana, with local leaders helping it grow the right way. They also discuss the expanding reach of Cowboy Ethics in schools across states like Ohio, Wyoming, and Nebraska, plus plans for a Cowboy Ethics Boot Camp to train teachers and spread the program even further.

Dwight shares a real success story from Elkhart, Indiana, where FFA participation jumped from 9 to 26 students under his guidance. Working on a 113-acre school farm and running a popular Monday program, he has helped students who once skipped class find purpose and direction. He’s also guiding students into internships and careers, including a former student now training to become an ag lender. With student interest in agriculture up 30–40%, this episode shows how character, hard work, and clear standards can build stronger kids, stronger schools, and a stronger rural future.
