When Love Turns Lethal: The Murder of Carlene Conley

Born in 1980, Paige grew up demanding constant attention from her mother, Carlene. As she entered her teenage years, her behavior spiraled into drug use, expulsions, theft, and repeated run-ins with the law.

Instead of setting firm boundaries, Carlene responded with unconditional protection. That unwavering love created a dangerous, codependent relationship. Paige lived at home, manipulated those around her, and became increasingly aggressive. Her rage spilled over onto her niece and nephew and escalated into physical attacks and weapon threats against family members. Time after time, Carlene refused to press charges, believing her daughter simply “needed her.”

The violence reached its horrifying peak on March 16, 2015. As Carlene prepared lasagna for her grandson’s birthday, Paige exploded with jealousy. In a brutal frenzy, she attacked her mother, striking her with a knife block and stabbing, slashing, and biting her 77 times. Afterward, Paige was found covered in blood and gave police multiple false stories before the truth emerged.

Paige Conley was convicted of murder and sentenced to 27 years in prison. After appealing on mental health grounds, she later accepted a reduced 20-year sentence, with possible parole in 2032. The episode closes with haunting reflections from Carlene’s surviving daughter, who believes Paige was “born evil,” and a sobering warning about untreated mental illness, enabling behavior, and the irreversible cost of ignoring violent warning signs.
