Turning Dairy Manure Into Renewable Energy with Grant Grinstead
Wisconsin dairy farmer Grant Grinstead joins Trent Loos on Rural Route to share how his Fond du Lac dairy farm became a renewable energy pioneer. Starting in 2004, the farm’s methane digesters generated electricity for about 800 homes for nearly 20 years. Today, those digesters produce renewable natural gas, injected into the national pipeline and fueling the equivalent of about 1,000 cars daily, while separated solids become cow bedding. Trent and Grant tackle dairy industry consolidation, federal energy subsidies, competition from wind and solar, farm labor challenges, and why family farms remain vital to American food production and national security.
