Rural Route: How Government Farm Programs Reshaped American Agriculture

Doug shares his personal journey from earning a science degree to farming full time, giving listeners a first-hand view of how farming shifted in the 1970s from diversified family operations to specialized, policy-driven production. As a former hog farmer in Wayne County, Doug explains why labor demands and federal incentives pushed him out of hog farming in the early 1980s.

Trent and Doug break down how guaranteed corn prices and target price programs encouraged overproduction, especially in Nebraska’s Sandhills, and how those same policies eventually collapsed. They dig into the creation of the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), which paid farmers to pull land out of production to fix the very surplus the government created. Doug also shares eye-opening insights from a 1997 trip to Bolivia, where CRP policies unintentionally boosted South American soybean production, land values, and global competition. The conversation wraps with a practical lesson on financial education, as Doug recounts how he taught high school students real-world investing skills that stuck for life. This episode is a must-watch for anyone who cares about farming, land use, and the future of American agriculture.
