Midwest Murder: The Winger Family Deception

Mark Winger, a respected nuclear engineer, claimed he heroically saved his wife from an attack by private driver Roger Harrington in August 1995. Police quickly accepted his story, and the case was closed in just 48 hours.

But the truth didn’t stay buried. As time passed, Mark’s disturbing behavior, fast remarriage, and hidden secrets raised serious red flags. When Donnah’s best friend came forward with explosive information about an affair and a proposed murder-for-hire plot, investigators reopened the case. Overlooked crime scene photos, missing evidence, and proof that Harrington had been invited into the home exposed a carefully planned setup.

Prosecutors revealed that Mark used Harrington’s troubled reputation as the perfect cover to murder his wife and silence a witness. In 2002, Mark Winger was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. This episode exposes how deception, greed, and betrayal destroyed a family—and how the truth finally caught up with a killer hiding in plain sight.
