District 5 Volleyball Tournament Recap
The final day of the District 5 Volleyball Tournament took place in Oakes Monday night. All three matches aired on BEK Sports 2, showcasing some of the district's best talent and sending four teams through to the Region 3 tournament in Ellendale. The entirety of that tournament will air beginning next week on BEK Sports.
Region Qualifier 1: #3 Oakes 3, #5 Griggs-Midkota 0
The Tornadoes successfully defended their home floor, fending off a third-set rally from the Griggs-Midkota Titans to wrap up their place in the Region 3 tournament. Ann Muggli and Lily Thorpe each had a trio of blocks in the middle, pacing the Oakes defense in the victory.
Region Qualifier 2: #4 Carrington 3, #6 Ellendale 0
In the battle of the Cardinals and rematch of last year's same region qualifier, Carrington emerge victorious over Ellendale. The Cardinals were led by senior captian Madison Johnson's 12 kills, with senior setter Kacie Rexin contributing three aces in the final set. The match's turning point came in set two, as Carrington climbed out of a 7-point deficit to steal momentum.
District Championship: #1 EKM 3, #2 LaMoure-LM 2
The championship match was a slugfest as LaMoure opened up an early two-set lead over state #9-ranked EKM. The Loboes led 20-15 in set three, but an gutsy Rebel comeback was spearheaded by senior outside hitter Mataeya Mathern. 26 kills later, Mathern and the Rebels flipped the script to win the match in 5 sets. EKM improves to 28-2 and has now won both of its five-set matches this year -- both against LaMoure-LM.
