BEK Friday Football Preview: Week 3
BEK's third week of football coverage will shine the spotlight on three more exciting matchups all over North Dakota. Here's the slate of action:
St. Mary's vs. Bismarck High -- 7:00 PM on BEK TV
This age-old rivalry resumes on Friday night at the MDU Resources Bowl in Bismarck Friday night. Both teams enter the matchup 0-1 after facing stiff competition on the road last week.
The Demons fell to defending champions Fargo Shanley by a final score of 35-7 while the Saints were shut out 37-0 by fifth-ranked Minot. Coach Toby Schweitzer has taken over the head coaching role for St. Mary's and brought in decorated offensive mind Bud Etzold. Their new offense will face a Demons defense that features seven returners poised for improvement from a year ago.
Watford City @ Valley City -- 7:00 PM on BEK Sports 2
With both teams coming off of wins, Watford City and Valley City are poised for an interesting matchup Friday night.
Both teams lost all-state running backs, but have plenty of talent in the backfield. Valley City captured a 40-0 victory over Turtle Mountain, paced by 87 rushing yards from Carter Borg. A physical ground game also powered the Wolves to a 22-16 victory over Hazen. Ethan Dennis has tallied 251 rushing yards through two games and will be leaned on heavily if Watford City wants to avenge last season's loss to the Hi-Liners.
North Prairie @ St. John -- 7:00 PM on BEK Sports 3
Ranked number 2 in 9-man football, the North Prairie Cougars lost to eventual state champions New Salem-Almont in the state semifinals last season. Led by seniors Blake Mattson and Nate Tastad, they have moved the ball with ease this season and outscored their first two opponents by a combined 100 points.
The St. John Woodchucks improved to 1-1 win a win over Midway-Minto last week. Senior tailback Cashmyn Belgarde has already racked up 495 rushing yards and nine total touchdowns, including an interception return in last week's victory. For all of the high-powered offense between the two, last year's meeting produced a 20-14 scoreline in North Prairie's favor. Tune in to see whether history repeats itself on BEK Sports 3.
