The Twisted Legacy of the Ranes Brothers: Michigan's Serial Killers Who Operated Independently

Unlike most criminal siblings who collaborate in their crimes, the Ranes brothers operated independently, yet their stories remain eerily connected by violence, manipulation, and psychological trauma.

Larry Ranes, born in 1945, had a troubled youth marked by instability and rebellion. His downward spiral into murder began in 1964 when he posed as a hitchhiker and executed schoolteacher Gary Smock in cold blood. But Smock was only one of several victims. During his confession, Larry admitted to four other murders, targeting gas station workers in what investigators believe was a subconscious response to childhood trauma involving his father, a former gas station attendant. Despite a psychiatric evaluation that deemed him insane, Larry was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, where he later changed his name to Monk Steppenwolf, distancing himself from his notorious past.

Danny Ranes, born two years earlier in 1943, followed an equally dark path. After serving prison time for attacking a young woman in 1968, Danny was paroled in 1972. It was then that he crossed paths with 15-year-old Brent Eugene Koster, a troubled youth whom he manipulated into becoming his accomplice. Together, they embarked on a killing spree that claimed at least four victims—young women who were kidnapped, assaulted, and murdered in horrifying acts of brutality. Their reign of terror ended in September 1972 when Koster’s loose tongue led police straight to them. Danny was convicted of multiple counts of murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole, while Koster, who later expressed deep remorse, was eventually released in 2021 after serving 48 years.

The twisted legacy of the Ranes brothers is a haunting reminder of the darkest corners of human nature. Join Midwest Murder as we break down the horrifying details, the psychological underpinnings, and the lasting impact of these crimes that shook Michigan to its core.
