The Plethora of Benefits Available for Veterans and How to Submit Claims

Paul is the author of the how-to guide Veterans Benefits for You: Get What You Deserve.

As a veteran himself and someone who served in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Paul knows the ins and outs of how American heroes can get the benefits they deserve.

He explains some of the simple ways vets can submit claims and even utilize the G.I. Bill to further their career opportunities after being honorably discharged.

General Overview of Benefits Veterans Can Access:

Veterans benefits in the United States are a range of services and supports provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to individuals who have served in the United States Armed Forces. These benefits are designed to assist veterans in various aspects of their lives after completing their military service. Key aspects of these benefits include:

  1. Health Care: The VA provides comprehensive medical care services to veterans. This includes hospital, outpatient, pharmacy, primary care, and specialized care services. Mental health services are also a significant part of VA health care.
  2. Education and Training: Through programs like the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Montgomery GI Bill, veterans receive assistance for higher education and vocational training. Benefits can cover tuition, fees, books, and living expenses during educational pursuits.
  3. Disability Compensation: Veterans with disabilities, injuries, or diseases incurred or aggravated during active military service can receive tax-free disability compensation. The amount depends on the degree of the veteran's disability.
  4. Pension Programs: The VA offers pension benefits to wartime veterans who meet certain age or disability requirements, and who have income and net worth within certain limits.
  5. Home Loans and Housing Assistance: The VA helps veterans with housing-related needs by providing loan guaranty benefits for purchasing, constructing, or refinancing a home. Additionally, grants are available for veterans with certain permanent and total service-connected disabilities to help purchase or construct an adapted home, or modify an existing home to accommodate a disability.
  6. Employment and Career Support: Programs like Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) offer services to help with job training, employment accommodations, resume development, and job-seeking skills coaching.
  7. Insurance: The VA provides life insurance programs to enable veterans to obtain affordable life insurance and offer financial protection for their families.
  8. Burial and Memorial Benefits: Veterans are entitled to burial benefits, which can include a gravesite in any of the VA's national cemeteries with available space, opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, a government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate, all at no cost to the family.
  9. Support for Families and Survivors: Benefits are also extended to the families and survivors of veterans, including education and training opportunities, health care programs, and dependency and indemnity compensation for surviving spouses, children, and parents of deceased veterans.
  10. Transition and Readjustment Counseling: The VA offers counseling to help veterans transition back to civilian life, including readjustment counseling services through Vet Centers.
