The Infamous Case of Sarah Pender: Murder, Manipulation, and A Daring Prison Escape

Sarah Pender, a 21-year-old secretary, seemed to live an ordinary life, but her boyfriend, Richard Hull, had a dark past filled with felonies and drug activity. Together, they shared a house with Andrew Cataldi and Tricia Nordman, two fugitives with criminal records of their own. Tensions boiled over between the couples, culminating in a brutal double murder on October 24, 2000. Hull, with an illegally acquired shotgun that Pender had purchased for him, shot both Cataldi and Nordman after a heated dispute. He later claimed self-defense, but the gruesome scene pointed to something more sinister.

Despite no physical evidence tying her directly to the crime, Pender was charged alongside Hull, largely due to a letter—allegedly written by her—where she confessed to masterminding the killings. Prosecutor Larry Sells painted Pender as a manipulative force, comparing her to Charles Manson. A convicted felon’s testimony further cemented the case against her. In 2002, she was sentenced to 110 years in prison, while Hull, who pleaded guilty, received a 130-year sentence.

Pender's case took a dramatic turn in 2008 when she escaped from the Rockville Correctional Center with the help of prison guard Scott Spitler and former inmate Jamie Long. Using charm and deception, she orchestrated a carefully planned escape, living as a fugitive in Chicago under a false identity. But the law caught up with her after a tip from America’s Most Wanted, leading to her capture.

Was Sarah Pender a cunning manipulator or a victim of a flawed justice system? With conflicting evidence, unreliable witnesses, and accusations of forged letters, her case remains one of the most debated in Indiana’s history. Tune in as Midwest Murder unpacks the twists and turns of this infamous case, questioning whether Pender was truly a "female Charles Manson" or simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
