The Gruesome Tale of Kevin 'Kip' Artz: Murder and Madness in the Midwest

Artz went on to dismember Patricia's body, carrying out acts of defilement by baking, boiling, and broiling her remains at Kip's Pizza Taco House, the restaurant the couple owned in Summit Township.

In a trial that gripped the community in 2001, Artz was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, currently being served at the Gus Harrison Correctional Facility in Adrian. Throughout his trial and subsequent appeals, a complex narrative of mental health, substance abuse, and legal battles unfolded. Artz's defense centered around a claim of marijuana-induced psychosis, a diagnosis proposed by Dr. Joseph Galdi, a neuropsychologist who only made this opinion known years after the trial, in a 2007 letter to a judge. This revelation spurred further legal proceedings as Artz argued that this evidence could have supported his insanity defense, suggesting he was not in control of his actions due to a severe mental condition exacerbated by drug use.

However, the appellate courts have been unsympathetic to Artz's appeals. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, alongside local appellate authorities, concluded that even if this evidence had been presented at his original trial, it was unlikely to have led to an acquittal. They pointed out that the defense had already argued that Artz was psychotic at the time of the murder due to a brain injury sustained shortly before the incident. The strategy did not hinge solely on the marijuana use but also on a broader narrative of Artz's mental health challenges. Nonetheless, the prosecutors effectively countered these claims, arguing that Artz's actions were deliberate and stemmed from a dispute over his marijuana use, particularly after a surgery he had undergone to repair a brain hemorrhage.

This episode of "Midwest Murder: True Crime Stories" not only revisits the brutal details of the crime but also explores the intricacies of the legal and psychological arguments that followed, offering a profound look into one of the most disturbing cases in the Midwest's criminal history.
