Syracuse University's New Mural Sparks Debate: Celebrated Icons Mixed with Controversial Figures

Including Che Guevara alongside figures like Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King, Jr. is seen as problematic. Che Guevara was a key figure in the Cuban Revolution and is often criticized for his violent tactics and involvement in executions during Fidel Castro's regime. Many view him as a controversial, if not outright negative, figure in history. They feel that displaying his image alongside universally respected figures might be an attempt to rewrite or whitewash his history and legitimize his more radical and violent actions.

In contrast, Mother Teresa is remembered for her selfless service to the poor in India, and Martin Luther King, Jr. is celebrated for his peaceful efforts to achieve civil rights for African Americans. Their legacies are largely seen as ones of love, compassion, and peaceful resistance.
