More on Jekyll Island and The Federal Reserve:

"The Creature from Jekyll Island: A Second Look at the Federal Reserve" delves into the intriguing origins and functions of the Federal Reserve System in the United States. The Federal Reserve, often referred to as the Fed, plays a crucial role in the nation's financial stability. It supervises and regulates banks and other key financial institutions to ensure the safety and soundness of the banking and financial system. Additionally, the Fed protects consumer credit rights and works to maintain the stability of the financial system, particularly in preventing risks that could arise in financial markets.

The story of the Federal Reserve began in late November 1913 on Jekyll Island, a private island off the coast of Georgia. Here, in a place called Millionaire's Village, some of the most influential and wealthy families in America, like the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Astors, and Morgans, gathered to plan a new Central Bank for the United States.

The Federal Reserve is governed by the Board of Governors, located in Washington, D.C. This board consists of seven members, or governors, who are nominated by the President of the United States and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. The Federal Reserve System is unique in its structure, being both public and private. It is described as "independent within the government," which means it operates independently but is still a part of the government structure.

It's important to note that the Federal Reserve doesn't have direct control over employment, inflation, or long-term interest rates. Instead, it uses various tools to influence the availability and cost of money and credit. These tools help guide the economy in the desired direction.

Banks often turn to the Federal Reserve in times of need. When commercial banks need to meet reserve requirements or solve temporary funding issues, they can borrow from the Federal Reserve System. This borrowing is done through what is known as the discount window, and the loans are subject to a discount rate, which is the interest rate charged by the Federal Reserve to the banks. This system is an essential part of the financial framework that supports the overall stability of the U.S. economy.
