From Steele, ND to the White House: Irene's Quilts Complete Their Journey

Irene Sprague, a BEK Communications Cooperative member from Steele and one of North Dakota’s last living Rosie the Riveters, marked her 100th birthday by hand-sewing quilts as thank-you gifts for the dignitaries who honored her in April for the role she played during World War II. Two of those quilts were made for President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. Because the two men live and work more than 1,600 miles away in Washington, D.C., U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer, of North Dakota, offered to carry their quilts back with him personally rather than trust them to the mail. He made Irene a promise that day: he would hand-deliver each one himself.

In last month’s Beacon, we shared with you that the Senator had successfully delivered Vice President Vance’s quilt in person.

Since then, the rest of the story has fallen into place.

The Quilt Reaches the Oval Office

Senator Cramer recently informed BEK that he was able to deliver Irene’s quilt to President Trump as well, carrying it into the Oval Office himself. And on August 11, Senator Cramer traveled to Irene’s home in Steele to hand-deliver something in return: a gift from the President and photographs from the Oval Office, marking the moment her handiwork completed its journey from Steele to the White House.

Senator Cramer told Irene that President Trump was genuinely surprised to learn that she had made the quilt herself, stitch by stitch. He also shared that the President had written something on a hat for Irene that Cramer said he’d never seen him write before: “Irene, I love you!” signed, President Trump.

Irene was thrilled to learn her quilts had made it all the way to Washington, and she gives full credit to Senator Cramer for following through on the promise he made her back in the spring.

A Story Still Being Stitched

For a woman who spent her youth doing the unglamorous, essential work that kept a nation running during wartime, it’s a fitting kind of tribute: a promise made in North Dakota, carried all the way to the halls of power in Washington, and kept in full.

At 100 years old, Irene has now seen her handiwork in the Oval Office and a note from a sitting president land in her own hands in Steele… proof, if any was needed, that a story that starts in a small North Dakota town doesn’t have to stay small.
