From Humbling Beginnings to Badlands Legend: The Cowboy Legacy of George Wolf

He had a natural instinct for the land, livestock, and the way of life that defines the West. As a young man, he worked at a saddle shop in Dickinson, learning the craft and tools of the trade, which only deepened his love for ranching.

Determined to live out his cowboy dream, George took on work for various ranchers along the Little Missouri River. He rode the rough terrain, broke horses, and earned his place among the hardworking men who kept the cattle industry alive. But George had bigger plans. With grit, determination, and the unwavering support of his wife, Irene, he set out to build a ranch of his own.

The couple acquired land in the Badlands, about 25 miles north of Medora, where they poured their sweat and dedication into creating something lasting. Through years of hard work, they transformed the land into what is now known as the 10 Section Little Missouri Cattle Ranch. Their success didn’t come easy—harsh winters, unpredictable weather, and the challenges of managing cattle in such rugged country tested their resolve. But the West rewards those with courage and perseverance, and George and Irene embodied both.

Today, their ranch stands as a testament to the cowboy way of life—a place where tradition, hard work, and a love for the land carry on. Special Cowboy Moments captures George Wolf’s journey from a boy with a dream to a respected rancher whose legacy still rides strong in the Badlands. His story is a tribute to the spirit of the American cowboy, proving that with heart, determination, and a good horse, anything is possible on the open range.
