Ethanol, Farm Power, and Pipeline Debate: Trent Talks Subsidies, Ownership, and Energy Policy

With years of experience working on behalf of ethanol producers—including time spent in Washington, D.C.—Todd offers a firsthand look at the many benefits ethanol brings to farmers and rural communities. While most people think of ethanol only as a fuel source, Todd explains how byproducts like high-quality cattle feed are just as important and valuable. Trent and Todd have a candid discussion about ethanol subsidies—where they agree, and where they part ways. The conversation turns toward the big oil companies and the subsidies they receive, particularly for blending ethanol into gasoline, often to the detriment of independent ethanol producers. Todd explains how farmer ownership of ethanol plants can help restore some leverage to producers, but also notes that many plants are no longer farmer-owned. The topic of CI (carbon intensity) scores comes up, and Todd explains how those are calculated and how they impact plant operations. Finally, Trent and Todd debate the issue of CO2 pipelines—Todd doesn’t believe they’re as harmful as Trent does, and they hash out their differing views.
